Nelson Mandela famously remarked, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” a sentiment universally acknowledged. For me, this transformative power of education manifests itself in the Music Therapy program at Chulalongkorn University. Introduced to me at a crucial juncture when I sensed an urgent need for change in the world around me, particularly amidst the isolating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the dearth of opportunities for nighttime musicians, this program became my beacon of hope in 2021.
Embarking on the music therapy journey at Chulalongkorn University, I found myself on an exhilarating path of self-discovery and professional growth. The Music Therapy program at Chulalongkorn University stands out as an innovative venture, unlike anything I had encountered before. Blessed with the guidance of distinguished professors hailing from Thailand and various corners of the globe—including the USA, Finland, Belgium, Taiwan, and beyond—our educational experience was enriched by a diversity of perspectives and methodologies.
The program seamlessly blends online learning with immersive onsite studies, offering us the chance to not only absorb theoretical frameworks but also engage deeply in their practical application. Exposed to an array of theoretical foundations and therapeutic techniques from across cultures, it’s truly a global initiative fostering a rich tapestry of knowledge and practice. In essence, the Music Therapy program at Chulalongkorn University is not just about acquiring skills; it’s about harnessing the power of music to effect profound change, both within ourselves and in the world we inhabit. This is truly a world programme.
Throughout my studies, I have honed my skills to become a well-prepared, adaptable, and introspective music therapist, capable of navigating diverse settings and connecting with individuals from all walks of life. Over the years, I’ve immersed myself in internships spanning grassroots hospitals to high-end medical facilities, working with clients ranging from children to those in end-of-life care.
While the initial semesters presented challenges, they served as invaluable lessons in the inherent struggles of pioneering music therapy as an emerging therapeutic modality. These experiences underscored the importance of resilience and innovation in the face of adversity.
In the latter stages of my education, I had the privilege of internships in hospitals where music therapy was already integrated into traditional medical frameworks. Here, I gained firsthand insight into the complexities of merging music therapy with established healthcare systems, including the challenges of garnering acceptance among doctors and other medical professionals.
Throughout this transformative two-year journey at Chulalongkorn University’s music therapy program, I have emerged as a qualified, versatile, and reflective practitioner, equipped to tackle even the most daunting cases. My experiences have instilled in me a deep commitment to expanding the reach of music therapy and its profound benefits to individuals worldwide.
While it’s premature in my journey as a music therapist to gauge its full impact, I can confidently attest to the preparation afforded by Chulalongkorn University’s music therapy program. This program has equipped me with the tools necessary to confront any challenges that may arise. Beyond its rigorous academic curriculum, which has deepened my understanding of music therapy’s processes and applications, Chulalongkorn University’s program distinguishes itself with an unparalleled support network. One notable example is the Music Therapy Alumni Club, a proactive initiative aimed at nurturing the professional growth of alumni. Through resources and collaboration, this club empowers Chulalongkorn University’s music therapy graduates to deliver exceptional service to their clients, setting a new standard within Thailand’s music therapy community.
