My educational experience at Chula was transformational! I chose to pursue my MA Music Therapy at Chulalongkorn University because the course was conducted in a hybrid format. That meant that I could stay in my home country for clinical attachments and still had access to lectures with the faculty online! The presence of a diverse faculty, comprising renown lecturers from Asia, Europe, and America, allowed me to experience and negotiate cultural differences and nuances. This is meaningful for me, coming from a culturally diverse country myself. Through my lecturers, I also became acquainted with music therapy practices in other parts of the world.

During my MA studies, I completed my practicum and internship in a special education school, acute hospitals and hospices in Singapore. I was extremely privileged to be supported by nurturing and experienced music therapist supervisors on-site as well as the university’s supervisor online. These practicum and internship periods allowed me to put my theory into application in the local setting. I cannot thank my supervisors enough for providing me with space, support and resources for my growth as a Music Therapist!

I am currently working at the largest and oldest general hospital in Singapore, where music therapy extends its support across all wards and ages. A typical day sees me reading case notes, meeting my patients, and working closely with the medical and allied health team for meetings, sessions or other research projects. During my sessions, I predominantly use my voice and guitar to support my patients towards their therapeutic goals. I really enjoy the therapeutic process which begins with building rapport with my patients. These days, I have come to realise that I enjoy sharing about music therapy with other staff in the hospital, through in-service presentations or shadowing. In hindsight, I am thankful to have been exposed to the different aspects of being a music therapist in this MA programme. I look forward to growing alongside my peers through the Music Therapy Alumni Club (MTAC)!
